Rabaul volcano is located at the eastern end of a 1000 km long volcanic chain extending from Manam volcano in the west to the tip of New Britain island in the east.

Rabaul is one of the most active volcanoes in Papua New Guinea, and one of its most dangerous.

Rabaul is one of the most active volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. The caldera forms an impressive bay on the northeasern end of New Britain Island.

The caldera has an elliptical form (14 x 9 km) and is surrounded by a steep volcanic ridge several hundred meters high. Rabaul has produced historically large eruptions, with the last occurring in 2006.

Rabaul has had major eruptions 3500 and 1400 years ago. An eruption of Rabaul in 1994 destroyed Rabaul city, the largest town on New Britain Island.

There are 8 active vents in Rabaul Caldera; Tovanumbatir, Kabiu, Rabalanakaia, Turanguna, Tavurvur, Sulphur Creek, Vulcan, Vulcan Island.
